Cyber Fraud: Ransomware and Business Email Compromise

REBA’s Residential Conveyancing Section (RCS) will host a practice development and educational program at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Cafe Escadrille, located at 26 Cambridge Street in Burlington.

Join us for a discussion on data security and cyber fraud.  Our panelists will also cover current matters at REBA and the CFPB, discuss current legislative matters and provide a UPL update.

Cyber fraud is on the rise; it can disrupt your business and result in substantial monetary loss.  There are over 4,000 Ransomware attacks a day in which cyber criminals gain access to computer systems and restrict use until a ransom is paid.  Cyber criminals will also hack into the email accounts of one or more parties to a transaction and re-direct closing funds by sending fraudulent wiring instructions.  Since 2013, there have been over 22,000 cases of email compromise involving over 3.1 billion dollars. We will review some detailed examples of cyber fraud and, in doing so, we will focus on how to avoid becoming a victim and what to do if it happens to you.

All REBA members and their guests are welcome, regardless of their practice concentration.  Please RSVP to Nicole Cohen at cohen@reba.net.

This program will be sponsored by Herbert H. Landy Insurance Agency, Belmont Savings Bank and Old Republic National Title Insurance Company.  While there is no charge to attend, please register to ensure that there will be ample refreshments for all.

We look forward to seeing you in Burlington on April 6th!

Sincerely,

Michelle T. Simons, Esq.
